Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might be wondering about happy mail, costs, shipping, donations, and privacy. Still curious? Write to us — the crow loves questions.

Who can request happy mail?
Anyone with a mailing address in the United States — for yourself, a friend, a family member, or anyone who could use a little glow. You can be any age, in any circumstance. There is nothing to qualify for and nothing to prove.
Does it really cost nothing?
Really. Happy mail is completely free: no payment, no donation, and no explaining your circumstances. Requests are made through our Zeffy page, where a free option is always available. Optional contributions exist only for people who want to support the project — they are never required to receive mail.
Do I have to explain why I want it?
Never. You don’t need a reason, a story, or a diagnosis. Wanting a little kindness is reason enough. (If you’d like to share a note with the crow, it will happily read it — but that’s entirely up to you.)
Where do you ship?
We mail happy mail anywhere in the United States. Unfortunately, we can’t send packages internationally at this time — postage beyond the U.S. is beyond our little budget. Our free printable resources are available to everyone, everywhere.
When will my package arrive?
Packages are sent in limited batches, as funding and supplies allow — so we can’t guarantee a specific mailing date or that every request will be filled. If you have a question about a request you’ve made, you’re always welcome to write to us.
Can I request happy mail for someone else?
Yes — for a friend, a family member, a neighbor, or anyone who could use a surprise. You supply their mailing address, and the envelope goes to them. It’s a lovely way to say “I’m thinking of you” without any words at all.
What do you do with my address and information?
Your mailing address is used to send your happy mail — that’s what it’s for. Requests are made through our Zeffy page, so their platform also handles your information according to their privacy policy. If you have any privacy questions at all, please write to us at shinythingsociety@gmail.com.
Are you a nonprofit? Are donations tax-deductible?
The Shiny Thing Society is independently operated and is not currently an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Financial contributions are voluntary and are not tax-deductible charitable donations. We keep everything small, transparent, and simple.
Is this therapy or professional support?
No — happy mail is emotional encouragement from a crow and a small kindness project, not professional mental health treatment, and it isn’t a substitute for care. If you’re struggling or in crisis, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the U.S.) or someone you trust. You deserve real support.
How can I help besides donating?
So many ways: share the project with someone who needs it, request mail for a friend having a rough season, print our free affirmation cards and leave one for a stranger, or simply pass along the kindness in your own way. Every act of noticing counts.
