our story

Why We Send Little Envelopes of Joy

The Shiny Thing Society is an independently operated kindness and mental wellness project based in Kalamazoo, Michigan — built on one simple belief: everyone deserves encouragement.

A cozy cottagecore writing desk with a bundle of letters tied in lavender ribbon, a gold wax seal stamp, a steaming teacup, and sprigs of lavender.

The Shiny Thing Society is built on a simple observation: the world can feel heavy, but tiny moments of care — a handwritten note, a sticker, a sentence that says you matter — have an outsized power to lighten it.

So that's what we make: small moments, folded into envelopes and sent out into the world. A letter from the Society Crow here. An affirmation card there. A paper star or two. Nothing expensive, nothing complicated — just proof that someone, somewhere, took a few minutes to wish a stranger well.

Anyone in the United States can request a free happy-mail package. No payment, no donation, no explanation of circumstances. Packages go out in limited batches, as funding and supplies allow.

what we believe

Kindness, Connection, Creativity

Kindness is free

Encouragement shouldn’t have a price tag. Happy mail is always free to request — kindness given with no strings, ever.

Connection heals

Loneliness is heavy. A surprise envelope is a small way of saying: you are noticed, you are thought of, you belong.

Creativity is care

Handmade cards, doodled stars, a crow’s worth of whimsy — we believe a little creativity makes kindness personal.

You matter. You deserve kindness. Just as you are, right now.

a gentle purpose

Little Joys, On Purpose

The name of the project comes from the crow’s habit of collecting shiny things. A gold button isn’t valuable — but it glows if you notice it. That’s the whole idea: noticing small joys on purpose is a gentle practice of caring for your own heart, and encouragement shared multiplies.

We like to think of every envelope as a tiny counterweight to a heavy day. It won’t fix everything — it isn’t meant to. It’s meant to say: somebody wished you well today.

Kindly note: The Shiny Thing Society offers emotional encouragement, not professional mental health treatment. If you’re in crisis or need support, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the United States) or another trusted resource. You deserve real care.
